Loom And Leaf vs. Purple Mattress Comparison: Which Is Best? Update 12/2024

Purple and Loom & Leaf are two of the most popular bed-in-a-box mattresses on the market today. Both of these mattresses have a lot to offer.

You might find it challenging at first to choose between these two mattresses. I, on the other hand, have all the knowledge individuals need to make an informed decision about which mattress is most suited to their needs. To help shoppers make an informed selection, this comparison will go over the construction of each mattresses in great detail and emphasize the most important points.

Key Similarities

  • Great customer service and generous trial periods are included with both mattresses.
  • Both of these mattresses are extremely long-lasting.
  • Both of these mattresses are a great deal for the money.
  • They have a similar level of elasticity.

Key Differences

  • The Purple is significantly less expensive than the Loom & Leaf.
  • The mattresses use a variety of materials in their construction.
  • In contrast to the Purple, which has a firm but squishy texture, the Loom & Leaf has a more traditional memory foam feel.

Purple Construction

  • Each layer of the Purple stands about 9.5″ tall.
  • The cover is thin and soft, thus it has little impact on how the mattress feels.
  • It’s a hyper-elastic polymer with a squishy feel in the first layer, which is 2″ thick.
  • The Plush Comfort Foam works as a buffer between the gel material and the base layer, which is 3.5″ thick.
  • 4″ of polyfoam is used as the foundation layer, which is a very ordinary foam.

Loom & Leaf Construction

  • The Loom & Leaf stands 12 inches tall and is made up of four distinct layers of foam.
  • The polyfoam quilting on the cover adds extra comfort.
  • Gel memory foam with air passages makes up the top two inches of the mattress.
  • Spinal Zone Gel laminate panel is used in the first layer, which helps keep the spine cool and provides support..
  • Then there is a transition layer of 2″ thick denser memory foam.
  • Final layer is a common polyfoam found in many other all-foam mattresses.

Construction Differences/Notes

  • Memory foams in the Loom & Leaf are high-density, so they should be excellent at conforming to your body. Foam should follow the body’s exact contours.
  • In order to get the classic memory foam feel, the Loom & Leaf mattress has many layers of memory foam.
  • One of the most notable features of the Purple’s hyper-elastic gel polymer is its ability to remain flat and supportive even after significant pressure has been applied to it. Weight applied to the gel grid causes it to deform.
  • This mattress is comfortable in all three sleeping positions thanks to the gel grid construction. Because it only collapses under the heaviest areas of the body, it should provide support for those who sleep on their backs and stomachs and pressure relief for those who sleep on their sides.
  • As a result, Purple mattresses are more breathable than those made by Loom and Leaf. As a result of the gel grid, the mattress should be more temperature-neutral.
  • Both of these mattresses are quite long-lasting and should prove to be excellent financial decisions in the long run. Unlike certain foams, the Purple’s hyper-elastic gel polymer shouldn’t lose its shape after prolonged exposure to moisture. The Loom & Leaf’s foams are quite dense and should be able to withstand a lot of wear and tear.

Firmness/Feel Differences

The Purple felt like a 7/10, while the Loom and Leaf felt like a 6.5/10 in terms of stiffness. However, based on one’s weight, one may have a varied experience on the Purple. The gel grid may feel firmer to lighter-weight persons because they aren’t hefty enough to activate it. To make the mattress feel softer, the gel should be broken down by heavier persons.

My back and hips sank into the Purple, while the rest of my body remained level and supported. This was a fantastic combination for me. In spite of this, the mattress felt a tad stiff as I shifted my weight to my side. Unfortunately, I don’t think my weight is sufficient to activate the gel grid. While lying on my back, the mattress provides adequate support.

When I sleep on the Loom & Leaf, I also get a good amount of support for my back. It isn’t as if I’m sinking into the foam, but rather, the foam is molded to my body’s shape. When I lay on my side, the mattress first feels quite firm. Although the memory foam softens after a few seconds, the pressure on my shoulders and hips is quickly relieved. The mattress is a little too soft for my liking when I’m on my stomach.

The Purple has a mushy gel-like feel that is both solid and soothing. I like the way it responds and how it has a good bounce. Most people should be able to easily change positions on the mattress.

In contrast, the Loom & Leaf mattress features a typical memory foam feel that initially seems firm but gradually softens, allowing you to sink in and rest comfortably. The Loom & Leaf will be more difficult to move around with this mattress because of its lack of bounce and memory foam’s inability to respond.

Purple’s firmness and feel are discussed in the video below.

Motion Transfer Differences

When it comes to handling motion transfer, the Loom & Leaf mattress contains thick layers of high-density memory foam, a material noted for its ability to effectively isolate motion.

I put a glass of water on each mattresses throughout my experiments. The Loom & Leaf mattress had a considerably less disruptive effect when I pressed onto it. Marten’s motions were less noticeable on the Loom & Leaf when I laid down on both mattresses and invited him to move around.

You shouldn’t be bothered by your partner’s motions on the Loom & Leaf when you’re sleeping with them. Ideally, it should be the ideal mattress for couples who do not want to be bothered by their partner’s movement.

Below is a video of the Purple demonstrating how it handles motion transfer.

Edge Support Differences

As a couple, you should consider how much of the mattress you can actually use when purchasing a mattress. Is it safe for them to sit or lay at the edge of the mattress without fear of falling off?

Both mattresses’ edge support isn’t very noteworthy. On the Purple, I don’t feel safe sitting on the edge; on both mattresses, I feel like I’m about to roll off.

Marten’s Take

He’s an employee of ours, but Marten has a quite different physique. About 230 lbs. is his weight at 6’7″ (I am 5’9″ and 160 lbs.). Here is what he had to say about these mattresses and their suitability for heavy sleepers:

When it came to ratings, I gave the Loom & Leaf an 8 out of 10, and the Purple a 6.5 out of 10. Because I am heavier than Joe, I have a very different outlook on life. Compared to Joe, I am feeling more stiffness in the Loom & Leaf but the Purple feels softer because of my larger weight collapsing the gel grid.

While my hips sink in a little too much on the Loom & Leaf, I’m still getting adequate lumbar support. When I sleep on my side, the mattress first feels quite solid, but it eventually softens and provides some relaxation for my shoulders and hips. On my stomach, the mattress is overly soft, and my hips bow inward, making it difficult for me to sleep.

On the Purple, the mattress collapses beneath my buttocks, making me feel amazing on my back, but not anywhere else. My shoulders and hips are relieved of pressure when I sleep on my side. A flat and sturdy mattress works well for me when I sleep on my stomach.

It’s possible that both mattresses would be suitable for heavy back and side sleepers, though. You should go with the Purple if you sleep on your back or side and are larger than me. Finally, if you sleep on your stomach, you should go with the Purple.

Marten’s own experience with the Purple mattress supports this conclusion. It’s true that the Loom & Leaf isn’t a great fit for heavier side sleepers, but I think he’s on the money.

Who Should Pick Purple:

  • Those who want a more affordable mattress – Compared to the Loom & Leaf, the Purple is a better overall value at a lower cost. If both beds sound like they’d be a good match, the Purple mattress may be a more cost-effective option.
  • Heavier side sleepers – The Purple is a great option for side sleeping for larger persons. In order for the mattress to collapse under your shoulders and hips, the heavier weight will trigger the gel grid and cause it to do so. As a result, heavier sleepers will benefit greatly from the mattress’s pressure-relieving properties.
  • Hot sleepers – The Purple is a good option for people who sleep in a room that is too hot at night. There is a lot of airflow because of the gel grid, which makes the Purple mattress a temperature neutral one.
  • Stomach sleepers – While the Loom & Leaf might be too supple for folks who sleep on their stomachs, the Purple should provide the necessary support. When they are in this position, the gel grid should not collapse, thus they should feel supported throughout their entire body.

Who Should Pick Loom & Leaf:

  • Light- or medium-weight side sleepers – The Loom & Leaf mattress is a good choice for those who sleep on their sides and are on the lighter end of the spectrum. It’s possible that the Purple might not provide the optimum alleviation for folks who aren’t obese.
  • Those who prefer a classic memory foam feel – For those who prefer to sink into their mattress gently, the Loom & Leaf is an excellent option. Memory foam has that slow-moving, quicksand-like effect.
  • People who sleep with a partner – For couples, the Loom & Leaf mattress should be a superior choice. Topped with a thick layer of memory foam, this mattress does a good job of dissipating motion. The Loom & Leaf should be less of a source of anxiety for people.

Overall

People should have no trouble making a decision if they consider the information presented above, as the disparities between the two options are substantial. For heavy side sleepers, hot sleepers, and the majority of stomach sleepers, the Purple is the superior option. Side sleepers who are light to medium in weight or who share a bed should favor the Loom & Leaf.
