Both Tuft & Needle and Casper, two of the most well-known online mattress retailers, are major players in the market. These businesses have been at the vanguard of the shift away from brick-and-mortar mattress stores toward online sales.

Sizing Options

It’s crucial to think about the practical aspects of a new mattress before making a final decision. A mattress’s weight, height, and size are just few of the factors that are taken into consideration.

Having to raise and carry a large mattress can be cumbersome. People who intend to relocate several times during the mattress’ useful life consider this while making a purchase decision.

For both of these reasons, height is critical. Fitted sheets with extra-deep pockets may be necessary for tall mattresses to stay in position. When it comes to getting in and out of bed, it’s important to consider the whole height of the bed, which includes the mattress and the frame.

To accommodate a wide range of sleeping arrangements, all models provide a variety of common mattress sizes.

Construction and Materials Comparison

The layout of the layers and the materials used in each layer have a significant impact on the quality of a mattress.

There are two parts to a mattress’s interior: the support core and the comfort system. The mattress’s support core is the mattress’s bottom section, which serves as the mattress’s foundation. It’s an important part of the experience since it provides a solid foundation for the comfort system.

The upper layers of the mattress are part of the comfort system, which has a significant impact on the bed’s qualities. Materials and layers aren’t limited to just one. Materials such as cotton and wool are commonly used in these layers.

From the comfort system’s down to the support core, it’s crucial to compare the Tuft & Needle and Casper mattresses in terms of their construction.

Tuft & Needle

Components of all Tuft & Needle mattresses are the same: The Original, Mint, and Hybrid all have a soft, breathable cover made of polyester and micro-polyamide.

Tuft & Needle’s unique Adaptive Foam is a second component in all of the company’s mattresses. Memory foam and latex characteristics are combined in Adaptive Foam, a new polyfoam formulation.

Adaptive Foam’s mild conforming properties allow it to provide additional cushioning to heavier portions of the body, making it ideal for relieving pressure points. Additionally, its responsiveness is above average, making it easy to navigate on top of it. While regular memory foam softens with heat, our gel-infused version does not. It is designed to combat heat buildup.

Original Tuft & Needle

Among all of the mattresses on the market, the Original Tuft & Needle mattress is one of the most straightforward:

  • An adaptive foam layer of 3 inches.
  • There are seven inches of HDPE foam in this mattress.

The Original’s medium firmness, which appeals to a wide range of sleepers despite its simple design, provides ample of support and comfort for the majority of sleepers.

Tuft & Needle Mint

Because of the Original’s success, Tufn & Needle has released a new product called the Mint, which only adds one layer to the design of the original:

  • An adaptive foam layer of 3 inches.
  • Adaptive Foam 2 inches thick.
  • There are seven inches of HDPE foam in this mattress.

People who weigh more than 230 pounds will benefit from the Mint’s improved pressure relief and long-term durability due to the comfort system’s two-inch thickness. Additionally, this thick comfort structure helps prevent you from sinking too far into the mattress. In order to protect the Mint Mattress from hazardous microorganisms, the mattress’s cover is coated with an antimicrobial protectant.

Tuft & Needle Hybrid

When it comes to making the Tuft & Needle Hybrid, the company goes about it a little differently.

  • Flexible Foam.
  • Micro-coils.
  • Polyfoam transition.
  • Innerspring coils encased in a sleeve

Due to the twin layers of coils, the Hybrid is softer than the all-foam beds, but it is also more responsive than the all-foam mattresses. This helps keep the Hybrid cool throughout the night because to the ample ventilation provided by the coils. Edge support is improved by the addition of coil layers to the Hybrid.

It’s possible to learn about the materials used in Tuft & Needle’s mattresses, but they don’t go into great detail. There are a number of reasons for this, but one of the most obvious is that the thickness of each layer is not publicly available. It is difficult to completely examine a mattress because there are less specifics about its construction, but customer reviews might provide useful information about its performance.

Casper

There are five distinct mattresses available from Casper.

The Casper Original and Casper Hybrid

There is a distinct difference between the Casper Original and Casper Hybrid mattresses in terms of their comfort systems.

Here are the layers that make up the Casper Original:

  • Polyfoam with a 1.5-inch layer.
  • Zoned memory foam 2 inches thick.
  • The foam is 7 inches thick.

The following is how the Casper Hybrid is constructed:

  • Polyfoam is 1.5 inches thick.
  • Memory foam zoned at 2 inches thick.
  • Coils are encased in a 7-inch foam sleeve that measures 6 inches in diameter.

To ensure responsiveness, the Casper and Casper Hybrid mattresses use two distinct foams in the comfort system. It is because of this that these mattresses provide exceptional pressure reduction and motion isolation. An increased level of edge support and bounce can be found in the hybrid model.

The Casper Element

The Casper Element is Casper’s entry-level product. There are no extras on this mattress, only a simple design:

  • Ventilated polyfoam is 3 inches thick.
  • Inches of polyfoam.

A layer of foam in the Element’s comfort layer provides pressure relief, but it lacks the zonal foam featured in other Casper mattresses. Designed as an entry-level mattress for those on a low budget, it offers good value for the money.

Casper Wave Hybrid

The following parts make up the Wave Hybrid:

  • Polyfoam with a thickness of one inch.
  • Ventilated latex of 1.5 inches thick.
  • 1.5 inches of memory foam with distinct zones.
  • Targeted gel pods are built within the polyfoam that is 1.5 inches in thickness.
  • Coils are encased in a 7-inch foam sleeve that measures 6 inches in diameter.

Casper’s creative product development methodology is seen in the Wave Hybrid’s strong design. The gel pod layer is the newest addition. To better accommodate the needs of different types of sleepers, these pods are included into the mattress. Motion isolation, bounce and pressure relief are all provided by the combination of latex-like polyfoam, latex, and memory foam atop the gel-pod layer.

The Wave Hybrid is able to keep the mattress cool even if it has a lot of contouring. It’s a good fit for most persons under 130 pounds and most side sleepers because it offers a medium-firm feel.

Casper Nova Hybrid

The following parts make up the Nova Hybrid:

  • 1′′ polyfoam that is adaptable.
  • Zoned polyfoam of 1.5 inches thick.
  • Memory foam cut to a 2-inch shape.
  • Six-inch pocketed coils in a seven-inch polyfoam container.

The Nova Hybrid, Casper’s softest mattress, is a hybrid model with great contouring. With a top layer of adaptable polyfoam that hugs the body and a second layer of polyfoam divided into three firmness zones, you may get the support you need and the cradling you need. Other advantages include a more than average level of motion isolation for couples and a constant interior airflow that ensures temperature neutrality. The Nova Hybrid is a great option for those who like a softer mattress feel.

Average Customer Ratings

Check through user reviews to get an idea of what people think about a mattress. Many people find it helpful to look at the experiences of previous consumers in order to get an idea of whether they’ll be happy with a particular mattress. However, bear these questions in mind when reading reviews:

  • Who is the reviewer? It’s best to read reviews from actual consumers rather than those who received a mattress for free or were rewarded for their time.
  • How many reviews are there? To ensure that the ratings aren’t influenced by outliers, the higher the sample size of reviews.
  • What’s the review score? On a scale of one to five, the actual rating provides a useful picture of consumer satisfaction.
  • What do the reviews actually say? Look beyond the numerical grade and see if there’s any reason to believe it. In this way, you can judge if the assessments are fair, as well as whether the pros and cons presented are applicable to your own circumstances and preferences.

In-Depth Ratings

Mattresses might look the same from a distance. However, if you take a closer look, the differences in construction, features, and performance begin to emerge. Here, we’ll go over the most important factors that influence consumer happiness with mattresses so that you may decide what’s most important to you and evaluate different mattress models side by side.

  • Durability: Mattresses take a lot of abuse, what with supporting the body for so many hours each night. A mattress that isn’t properly constructed can wear out more quickly, reducing its ability to relieve pressure, bounce, and provide comfort. A mattress that lasts longer is more cost-effective in the long run. For the most part, most mattresses last for five years, although some are constructed to last for several more years.
  • Motion Isolation: When two people sleep together, it’s common knowledge that one person’s twitching and squirming might disturb the other. By minimizing the amount of movement that may be conveyed from one area of the mattress to another, motion isolation can help keep your sleep interrupted to a minimum. When it comes to motion isolation, memory foam tops the list, although polyfoams and latex aren’t far behind.
  • Sex: As far as sexual activity goes, seek for a mattress that is responsive enough. Having a responsive mattress makes it easy to get in and out of bed fast. The responsiveness of latex and hybrid mattresses is usually the best. When pressure is removed from a plush mattress, it might impede sex since it takes time for the mattress to return.
  • Temperature Neutrality: Overheating can be a problem with some mattresses. Because it is so tightly wrapped around the body, it typically blocks the flow of cool air. Memory foam is one of the materials that is more susceptible to overheating. In order to reduce heat retention and increase airflow around the body and through the mattress layers, many mattress manufacturers have included innovative technologies.
  • Pressure Relief: The body’s shape and weight distribution determine the amount of support it needs. The lower back, abdomen, and shoulders are some of the places where more padding is needed. To avoid discomfort, these pressure points on the body should be accommodated by the mattress. Mattresses that have at least a moderate amount of contouring are the most helpful at relieving pressure points and aligning the spine.
  • Off-gassing: During the manufacturing process, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be released into the air when a mattress is first installed in your bedroom. This isn’t harmful to your health, but it does have a distinct smell. If you’re extremely sensitive to smell, you may find this stench to be unbearable after just a few hours, but it’s usually gone after a few days.
  • Ease of Movement: Even those who prefer a cuddly sensation don’t want to feel like they’re slumbering in quicksand. Too much sink and not enough suppleness in a mattress might lead to this feeling. Combination sleepers, who regularly switch positions during the night, need a mattress that is easy to get in and out of.
  • Edge Support: You might even feel like you’re going to roll out of bed or be thrown from it if the mattress’s perimeter is too thin. Mattresses that are too soft or lack responsiveness are more likely to have this problem. This issue is more critical for persons who sleep or sit near the edge of the bed, hence some beds are reinforced along the edge to aid with this.

Below you’ll find detailed comparisons between the Tuft & Needle and Casper mattresses in each of these areas.

In-Depth Pricing

The cost of a mattress can vary widely. For buyers who are already perplexed as to why the price of a mattress varies so widely, promotions are plentiful.

As a general rule, consumers rarely pay the full retail price (MSRP) for any given product; instead, there is usually always an offer to lower the final cost.

The second thing to keep in mind is that a more expensive mattress does not necessarily equate to a better one. There is a correlation between price and quality, but it is not a perfectly correlated relationship due to a variety of reasons. The following are some examples of these factors:

  • How many levels there are in total.
  • The layer thickness.
  • Each layer’s material composition.
  • What certifications does the mattress have? (such as for organic production).
  • The country of origin of the mattress.
  • Special features are included (for pressure relief, temperature regulation, or other performance elements).

It’s a good thing for consumers that the mattress market is so competitive that amazing deals can be found in nearly any price range.

Casper and Tuft & Needle’s mattress retail prices are shown in this table for each of the common sizes.

Tuft & Needle and Casper’s online mattress offers highlight the wide range of costs in the market.

In terms of cost, the Casper Element and the Tuft & Needle Original are almost identical. Both offer a low-cost, all-foam, no-nonsense solution.

The Casper Original and the Tuft & Needle Mint are two more sturdy all-foam mattresses with a similar pricing when you step up the price a bit. Both of these 12-inch versions are fantastic value options. With a thicker comfort system than inexpensive ones, they offer a more lasting and well-rounded bed.

The Casper Hybrid mattress is more expensive than the Tuft & Needle Hybrid, despite the fact that both are made of foam. Costlier Tuft & Needle Hybrid mattresses contain a coil-on-coil design that appeals to those who prefer the feel of innerspring coils.

Casper is the only mattress company to offer luxury mattresses. Innovative materials are used in the support and temperature regulation of the Nova Hybrid and the Wave Hybrid. Not surprisingly, these mattresses are more expensive than the budget and value offerings from these two firms.

Regardless of which choice you choose, make sure to hunt for a discount or promotion because in most situations you can save at least 5% off the retail price.

Trials, Warranty and Delivery

The success of firms like Casper and Tuft & Needle has been largely due to their ability to make online mattress shopping convenient for customers. To make this happen, we had to pay close attention to the shipping, return, and warranty operations.

To help you get started, we’ve outlined the practicalities of online mattress purchases and what to expect from these two industry leaders.

Shipping

Mattress-in-a-box shipping or White Glove delivery are the two options available when purchasing a mattress online.

Mattress-in-a-Box Shipping

In the internet mattress sector, mattress-in-a-box shipping has proven instrumental. FedEx or UPS ground services are used to ship the mattress compressed and wrapped in plastic. Once you remove the package and carry the mattress to your bedroom, the mattress decompresses to its full size.

This is the most common shipping method for internet mattresses, and it is nearly always supplied for free by the retailer. The package is usually delivered within a few days of the order being placed. Shoppers should be advised that two individuals are normally needed to move the mattress box and assemble the mattress.

All of Tuft & Needle’s mattresses come with free shipment in a box. Mattress-in-a-box shipping can be expedited for a fee.

The Casper Original, Hybrid, and Element mattresses are all eligible for free standard shipping from Casper. For a charge, certain sites provide expedited shipping, including same-day delivery. White Glove delivery is included in the price of the Wave Hybrid.

White Glove Delivery

Installing a mattress is included in the White Glove delivery service. The mattress is delivered to your home and installed in your bedroom by a team. The service normally includes the removal of your old mattress as well after they are done.

Wave Hybrid mattresses in king and California king sizes can be delivered for free with Casper’s White Glove service. Various sizes of Wave Hybrid mattresses, as well as other Casper mattresses, are available for an additional cost.

For an additional fee, Tuft & Needle offers White Glove delivery.

Shipping Outside the Contiguous United States

Alaska, Hawaii, and other places outside the contiguous 48 states have varied shipping policies. White Glove delivery, for example, may not be an option if delivery is not accessible. Extra fees and charges are not uncommon.

Neither Casper nor Tuft & Needle ships to Alaska, Hawaii, or some overseas destinations. Depending on the shipping address, an additional charge is applied at checkout.

Returns

The return policies of online mattress retailers tend to be more generous than those of brick-and-mortar establishments. These return policies, which are frequently referred to as “sleep trials,” let you try the mattress out for a specified length of time before issuing a refund if you’re not satisfied.

Sleep trials are preferred by the majority of customers over showroom visits where they may only spend a few minutes on a bed. It’s common for online retailers to make the return process as easy as possible.

In terms of returns, both Casper and Tuft & Needle have no hassles. During the 100-night sleep trial, there is no minimum number of nights that you must retain the mattress. There are no restocking fees or return shipping costs if you decide to return a mattress from one of these companies.

Warranties

There is nearly always a warranty included with the purchase of a new mattress. Defects in materials or workmanship are covered by a guarantee.

Normal wear and tear and unintentional damage are almost never covered by mattress warranties. So they shield the product from more extreme or abnormal degradation. In addition, the warranty stipulates that the mattress must only be used with specific types of bed frames and that adequate care must be taken in its use.

A warranty stipulates a repair if a problem is discovered. Therefore, the company has the option to either repair or replace a damaged mattress. An extended warranty is a type of prorated warranty in which customers are required to pay a portion of any repair or replacement costs, and their part increases as time passes. The coverage of a non-prorated warranty is the same during the whole warranty duration.

In the unlikely event of a mattress defect, consumers of Tuft & Needle and Casper can rely on a 10-year guarantee that is non-prorated and friendly to them.

Firmness And Feel Differences

The stiffness variations between the Casper and Tuft and Needle have already been mentioned. To learn more about the firmness of these mattresses and how they compare to the Tuft and Needle, keep reading.

How Firm Are The Casper And Tuft And Needle Mattresses?

A firmness rating of 7/10, which is only a tad above average, is what we found with the Casper. Again, the Casper’s zonal design merits reiteration. Consequently, while people are sleeping on their backs or stomachs, the Casper will feel firmer than it does when they are sleeping on their sides.

We found the Tuft and Needle to be a 6.5/10, or medium firmness, for us. With the harder support layer, Adaptive Foam has a medium level of firmness. The top layer is soft and not too thin.

The firmness of both the Casper and Tuft and Needle mattresses will vary substantially depending on the size and weight of the person sleeping on them. Larger people may think these mattresses are firmer because they press in more, while lighter people may think they are softer because they don’t press in as far.

Sleeping On The Casper And Tuft And Needle Mattresses

The Casper mattress has proven to be a good fit for us thus far. The top layer of polyfoam fits to our body’s curves, while the underlying foam layer supports us below. Additionally, we can feel the Zoned Support layer supporting us in our lower back.

When it comes to side sleepers, the Casper is a good option because it doesn’t put too much stress on the shoulders and hips. Our shoulders benefit from the mattress’s zoning, which makes it softer under our skin.

We don’t feel like our hips sink in too far while sleeping on the Casper. We’re getting a lot of assistance from the firmer center zone, which helps us stay in line.

The Tuft and Needle is less supportive for back sleepers than the Casper. The Casper’s zonal construction is lacking, and we’d like a little more back support.

With our shoulders and hips sinking into the Adaptive Foam layer, we are able to sleep comfortably on our side. However, as we’ll see in the following section, this may not be the case for larger individuals.

When we slept on our stomachs, the Tuft and Needle was not supportive enough and our hips bowed slightly into the mattress. When we sleep in this posture, we require a firmer mattress that is more supporting.

What Do The Casper And Tuft And Needle Mattresses Feel Like?

Resilient foam is used in the Casper as well as the Tuft and Needle bed frames. Casper’s polyfoam and Tuft’s & Needle’s Adaptive Foam are both soft yet have a lot of bounce. Both the Casper and Tuft and Needle may be moved and repositioned with ease thanks to this feature.

Zoned Support is a big difference between Casper and Tuft and Needle. The Tuft and Needle mattress provides a more consistent hardness and feel, but the Casper mattress can be harder or softer depending on the sleeping position.

Check out our Amerisleep vs. Tuft & Needle mattress comparison for a more detailed look at the responsiveness of each.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs

The Casper mattress is ideal for back sleepers of average weight, as it provides excellent lumbar support. Both mattresses are suitable for those who sleep on their sides and are of average weight, so they should be able to get the pressure relief they require. The Casper mattress is best for stomach sleepers and those of average weight.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs

If you’re a larger person, the Casper mattress is the best option for all three sleeping positions. However, with the Casper, they won’t have as big of a problem with back sleepers not getting adequate support. Even so, if you’re a big back sleeper, you might want to look into the Casper Wave Hybrid or Nova Hybrid mattresses, which also have coils.

Larger persons who sleep on their sides will put a lot of strain on both beds. Their shoulders and hips need to be appropriately supported by a mattress with a deeper comfort layer.

Larger folks who sleep on their stomachs will get additional support from the Casper mattress, but they’ll probably prefer a firmer mattress. Even with its zoned construction, the Casper may not be able to provide enough support for stomach sleepers who are larger than average.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs

Both mattresses should be comfortable for lighter sleepers. Both mattresses will provide adequate support for back and side sleepers, and both mattresses will provide adequate pressure reduction for side sleepers. Tuft and Needle will be a better choice for stomach sleepers, but those who are a little heavier will still be supported by the Casper.

To save money, light sleepers can choose the Tuft and Needle over the Casper, which is a more streamlined, value alternative.
